What is Diamond Carat Weight: From Physical Dimensions to Market Value?
Mathematical Foundation
Laws & Principles
- Carat vs. karat: these are completely different measurements. Carat (ct) is a unit of mass for gemstones: 1 carat = 0.200 grams = 200 milligrams. Karat (kt) is the purity unit for gold: 24kt = pure gold, 18kt = 75% gold. A '1 carat diamond in an 18kt gold ring' uses both units independently.
- Why depth percentage matters more than carat weight: two round brilliant diamonds can have the same carat weight but look dramatically different in size based on their cut proportions. A 'spread' diamond with a shallow cut (57% depth) appears larger face-up but leaks light through the bottom, reducing brilliance. A 'spready' 1ct stone may look like a 1.10ct stone but exhibit the 'fish-eye' effect — a gray circular reflection visible with the naked eye. GIA Excellent cut requires 59–62.6% depth.
- The four Cs and why cut dominates: GIA grades diamonds on Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat (the 4Cs). Cut is the only C determined by the human cutter — Color, Clarity, and Carat are natural properties. A GIA Excellent cut grade maximizes light return and can make a G-color stone appear whiter and a VS2-clarity stone appear cleaner than their grades suggest. Budget-conscious buyers often choose E/G color + SI1/VS2 clarity in GIA Excellent cut and get excellent value.
- Why the formula slightly overestimates: the formula assumes a geometric approximation of the crown and pavilion shapes. Real brilliant-cut diamonds have crown angles, table percentages, star facets, and lower girdle facets that cause slight deviations. The formula is accurate within ±3% for well-proportioned stones but diverges for very shallow or very deep cuts. GIA certificates report the graded weight to 0.01ct (the 'screener' weight) — this is the authoritative value.
Step-by-Step Example Walkthrough
" Buyer measuring a loose diamond before purchasing: calipers read 6.50mm diameter, 4.00mm depth. "
- Carat: 6.50² × 4.00 × 0.0061 = 42.25 × 4.00 × 0.0061 = 1.030 ct.
- Depth %: 4.00 / 6.50 × 100 = 61.5% → GIA Excellent range (59–62.6%). ✅
- Cross-check: GIA average for 1ct round is 6.5mm, which matches.
