What is Soffit & Fascia Geometry?
Mathematical Foundation
Laws & Principles
- H.A.P. is the vertical distance from the plate to the top of the rafter at the seat cut.
- If the ledger drop is positive, you measure DOWN from the top plate line.
- If the ledger drop is negative, you measure UP from the top plate line (common on low pitches).
- The 'Overhang Run' is the horizontal distance from the wall to the inside of the fascia board.
- Consistency in H.A.P. across all rafters is critical for a straight soffit line.
Step-by-Step Example Walkthrough
" 8/12 pitch, 24" overhang, and generic 4.5" H.A.P. "
- 1. Find raw vertical drop: 24 * (8/12) = 16 inches.
- 2. Subtract H.A.P.: 16 - 4.5 = 11.5 inches.
- 3. Result: Measure down 11.5" from the top plate line to set the ledger.
