Quick Answer: How do you estimate tile and grout?

To estimate tiles accurately, divide the total square footage of your wall or floor by the square footage of a single tile. Then, immediately multiply that number by 1.15 (to add a mandatory 15% waste buffer for broken tiles and cut edges). Grout is estimated volumetrically based on the thickness of the tile and the width of the target spacer you are using.

Warning: Never attempt to order the "exact" calculated number of tiles. Tile is produced in distinct 'dye lots'. If you run out of tile and order one more box a month later from a different dye lot, the color will permanently clash with the rest of the wall.

Costly Tile Failures

The Shrinkage Crack

A homeowner installs rustic handmade Spanish tiles with thick 3/8-inch grout lines to give it an old-world architectural feel. However, they buy cheap "Unsanded" grout from the hardware store because it looks smoother on the display shelf. Because the joint is massive, there are no solid sand particles to physically lock the massive volume of liquid mud together. As the mud cures and the water evaporates, the entire joint shrinks brutally, spider-cracking the grout across the entire floor within 72 hours.

The 50% Brick Stagger Snap

A designer insists on taking massive 12x24-inch porcelain tiles and laying them in a 50% staggered "brick" pattern on the floor. Large format tiles naturally bow upwards slightly in the kiln during manufacturing. By putting the absolute highest bowing center point of one tile directly next to the deepest, lowest edge point of the next tile via a 50% offset, massive "lippage" tripping lips are created. A heavy footstep catches this lip and snaps the tile violently. ANSI laws mandate a maximum 33% offset limit for large tiles to prevent edge stepping.

Professional Setting Strategies

Do This

  • Slake your grout. Never just mix grout and instantly pour it on the floor. Mix it to a peanut-butter consistency, let it sit strictly untouched in the bucket for exactly 10 minutes (called 'slaking' the chemicals), and then give it one final quick mix. This is required for the color pigments to fully activate and bond uniformly.
  • Back-butter large tiles. If you are installing 12x24 or 24x48 inch tiles, spreading thinset solely on the floor isn't legal. You must take a flat trowel and physically aggressively scrape directly onto the entire rear back face of every single tile before setting it down. This guarantees the mandatory 95% mortar contact rule.

Avoid This

  • Never add water to stiff grout. If you are working slowly and the bucket of grout begins to harden, DO NOT pour more water into it and try to re-blend it. You will catastrophically dilute the hardened epoxy bonds and ruin the color. Just throw the batch away and mix fresh dry mud.
  • Do not attempt 1/16" joints on pressed ceramic. Cheap subway tile or glazed ceramics are rarely perfectly uniform. If you try to force them into an ultra-tight 1/16-inch spacer, the microscopic size differences will heavily compound line by line until row 7 is visibly completely slanted compared to row 1. Give cheap tiles wider 3/16-inch joints so the grout line visually eats the differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use Sanded or Unsanded grout?

It is strictly determined by your plastic spacer size. If your spacer gap is perfectly 1/8-inch or wider, you MUST use Sanded grout to prevent spider-cracking. If your joint is a hair-thin 1/16-inch, you MUST use Unsanded grout so the mud can physically fit smoothly into the gap.

What is a "Rectified" tile?

Clay aggressively warps and shrinks strangely when baked in a 2,000-degree kiln. A "rectified" tile is taken out of the kiln and run under a diamond-laser saw to aggressively trim the edges into mathematically absolute perfect rectangles, permitting ultra-slim layouts.

Why did my white grout dry completely gray?

This is called 'efflorescence' or 'pigment washing'. You either added too much water to the original powdery mix, OR you used a soaked, dripping wet sponge to aggressively scrub the tiles during the cleanup phase, deeply washing out the delicate color pigments before they chemically bonded.

Can I just run down to Home Depot and buy one more box?

Usually no. Tile is manufactured in massive localized 'dye lots'. A tile printed on a Tuesday in June will be a slightly darker blue than the exact same barcode tile printed on a Friday in October. If you mix dye lots on a clean wall face, the human eye will instantly detect the harsh color seam.
