What is Running Pace & Speed Arithmetic?
Mathematical Foundation
Laws & Principles
- The 1.60934 Conversion: 1 statute mile = 1.60934 kilometers exactly. This means a 7:00/mile pace = 7:00 ÷ 1.60934 = 4:21/km. Runners often estimate with the approximation 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km, but this introduces a small error that accumulates over marathon distances.
- Speed vs Pace: Speed (MPH, km/h) and Pace (min/mile) are mathematical reciprocals. Speed = Distance ÷ Time; Pace = Time ÷ Distance. An 8:00/mile pace = 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 MPH. Improving pace by 1 minute/mile is NOT a linear speed gain — going from 12:00 to 11:00/mile improves speed by 0.45 MPH, but going from 7:00 to 6:00/mile improves speed by 1.43 MPH.
Step-by-Step Example Walkthrough
" A 5K race (3.1 miles) completed in 25 minutes, 30 seconds. "
- Total seconds: 25 × 60 + 30 = 1,530 seconds.
- Pace per mile: 1,530 ÷ 3.1 miles = 493.5 sec/mile = 8:13.5 min/mile.
- Convert to km: 3.1 miles × 1.60934 = 4.989 km.
- Pace per km: 1,530 ÷ 4.989 = 306.7 sec/km = 5:06.7 min/km.
