MegaCalc Beginner’s Guide
Master Scientific CAS, Retail, Finance (TVM), and Statistics modes in minutes.
← Back to CalcadyScientific Mode — CAS Engine
Unlike a standard calculator, MegaCalc’s Scientific mode runs a full Computer Algebra System (CAS) powered by Nerdamer. This means it can perform symbolic calculus, solve for x, and retain exact numbers like fractions and π without floating-point rounding errors.

The SHIFT Button — Dual-Label Keys
Every function key has a primary label (center) and a secondary label printed in amber at the top-left. The amber label is the inverse or advanced variant.
How it works
- Tap ⇧ SHIFT — the button glows amber and shows ⇧ SHIFT ON.
- Tap the function key you want its amber variant for (e.g. sin becomes sin⁻¹).
- SHIFT automatically deactivates after one use.
Master Example — Energy of a Wave Signal
An engineering problem: calculate the exact energy of an alternating wave signal from 0 to π.
The Integral
Definite Integral Syntax
MegaCalc uses defint(expression, lower, upper, variable).
So our problem exactly becomes:
defint((10*sin(x))^2, 0, pi, x)
Button Sequence
| Key | What it appends |
|---|---|
| ∫️_a^b | defint( |
| ( 1 0 × sin x ) | (10*sin(x) |
| x² | ^2 |
| , 0 , | ,0, |
| π , x ) | pi,x) |
| = | Commit → CAS evaluates |
Result
50π
Exact symbolic result
157.0796…
Decimal approximation
✨ The CAS returns the exact answer 50*pi
— no floating-point drift, no approximation errors. A standard calculator would simply crash or output garbage.
CAS Quick Reference
| Operation | Syntax | Example Result |
|---|---|---|
| Definite Integral | defint(f,a,b,x) | → 50*pi |
| Indefinite Integral | ∫ f(x) | → -cos(x) |
| Derivative | diff(f, x) | → cos(x) |
| Arc-sine (SHIFT) | ⇧ sin | → asin(0.5) = 30° |
| e to the power x | ⇧ ln | → e² = 7.389 |
Retail Mode
Retail mode gives you a persistent tax rate and a one-tap Cost / Sell / Margin auto-solver. Perfect for pricing products, stripping tax at the register, or calculating markup on the fly.
Setting Your Tax Rate
- Type your tax rate — e.g.
8.25. - Press SET TAX — the amber TAX=8.25% indicator appears in the ledger.
- Your tax rate persists across all subsequent calculations until you change it.
TAX+ / TAX− Buttons
- TAX+ — adds tax to the displayed amount. Enter
100→ TAX+ →108.25. - TAX− — strips tax from a tax-included price. Enter
108.25→ TAX− →100.
Cost / Sell / Margin Auto-Solver
Enter any two of the three values and the third is computed automatically.
# 40% margin on a $60 cost item
60 → COST
40 → MARGIN
CPT SELL → result: 100.00
Formula: Sell = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin% ÷ 100)
Finance Mode — Time Value of Money
Finance mode is a BA II Plus–style TVM solver. Enter any 4 of the 5 variables and it computes the 5th instantly.
N
Periods
I/Y
Rate %
PV
Present Value
PMT
Payment
FV
Future Value
The Golden Workflow
- Press CLR TVM to reset all registers.
- Type a number, then tap its variable button — e.g. 30000 → PV.
- Repeat for each known variable.
- Press CPT — a blue "CPT MODE" banner appears.
- Tap the variable you want to solve for.
Worked Example — Car Loan Payment
# $30,000 car · 60 months · 6% annual (0.5%/month)
30000 → PV
60 → N
0.5 → I/Y
0 → FV
CPT → PMT
Result: -579.98 (negative = cash leaving your wallet)
Sign Convention
- + = money coming in to your hands (loan proceeds, savings payouts).
- − = money going out of your hands (monthly payments, deposits).
Use +/− to flip a value's sign before storing it.
Statistics Mode
Build a live dataset and instantly compute 8 aggregations — mean, sum, standard deviation, variance, and geometric mean.
Building Your Dataset
- Type a number (e.g.
42). - Press ADD ↵ — the value is stored. The tape shows the running list and count (n=…).
- Repeat for each data point.
- Tap any stat button to compute against the full dataset instantly.

Clearing the Dataset
- ⌫ Removes the last digit of the current entry (dataset unchanged).
- CAD Clear All Data — wipes the entire dataset.
- AC Clears the current entry but keeps the dataset intact.
